A Free SoftGrid Migration Tool

Softgrid migration tool.

After Microsoft acquired and dropped the pricing for Softricity’s SoftGrid, interest for the product has accelerated. And because converting MSI-based application packaging into SoftGrid sequences can be an extremely laborious task, Dennis Damen and Rodney Medina from Login Consultants created the free SoftGrid Migration Tool to help alleviate this problem.

Getting E61 to work with SSL for Zimbra

Had some trouble with getting Zimbra SSL certs to work wth my E61. This wiki page was not completely right for some reason. Using IE and getting the (tomcat) SSL cert from the web page is also important. The tomcat server seems to have a different cert from the main CA/smtp/etc services. Not sure while.

For some reason Firefox doesn’t allow you to save a SSL cert to disk. Or at least I haven’t found the correct method.

Anyway I’ve got pop to work well with Zimbra on the E61, previously I got the Zimbra Mobile to work with a trial Network Edition version. I might try out Funambol bext to see if it works with the Open Source version of Zimbra.

Remote booting in Vmware and Xen

This has been sitting my drafts for a while. Might be useful.

I’ve collected a few interesting pages in providing remote booting with Vmware and Xen guests.

Using AoE and Etherboot. This is still work in progress.

http://www.coraid.com/support/linux/contrib/vantuyl/aoeboot.html

HOWTO: AOE in domU and boot from it. http://lists.xensource.com/archives/html/xen-users/2006-07/msg00595.html

My target environment is XEN, and the relevent parameters to be changed are:

ramdisk = "/boot/img.aoe"
root = "/dev/etherd/e9.0 ro"

(or whatever your aoe target happens to be… I think that was the vblade
default example).

Can I PXE boot to an iSCSI target from within a virtual machine from VMware or Microsoft?

Yes, you can use winBoot/i to network boot VMware and Microsoft virtual machines from an iSCSI target. HBA-equipped systems hosting virtual machines generally do not allow sharing (or virtualization) of the HBA-capability within the vm environment. We recommend using our Managed Boot Agent on Disk (MBAoD) for VMs to PXE-enable the virtual NIC within the virtual machine.

Clearspace and Openfire

Clearspace is a team collaboration java based application that integrates IM, files, wiki and blogs. It is commercial, but has a free-to-use 5 user version. Openfire is a jabber/XMPP server which seems very powerful. It is open-source, but has a commercial version with additional features.

I’ve been planning to try out some Jabber servers once I get my new hardware in place. Openfire has a nice looking admin interface and seems to be well built. I might not have to look far.  Clearspace might also compete with the Alfresco planning I’ve been doing.

Gap Minder

It’s not often you see some that could make a difference in peoples understanding of the world.  Statistics and lies are often used together, but this is true of all knowledge. Without the tools to ask questions we can not hope to understand ourselves.

From slashdot, see also the Gap Minder homepage and have a play with the tool at google labs. Will be interesting to see if

The Principals of Beautiful Design

The Principals of Beautiful Design looks like a interesting book to read. The author’s website for the book is cleverly put together. This from  Stylegala:

I was immediately attracted to the many qualities of this website. From its chilled blue colour scheme to the big friendly two column layout, it oozes quality. Even the unusual hand-drawn typeface works without detriment to the design.However the real “wow” factor becomes evident when you move your mouse over the navigation links, or click them. The unique visual prompts have been thoughtfully designed and portray a friendly, hands-on approach which I imagine fits the aura of the book like a tailor-made glove. Personally I would have removed the hover effect and left it to click only, but that’s something and nothing.

Installed a couple plugins

Found a sliver of time and installed a couple plugins today. WordPress makes this a very easy process, which is one of the reasons I stick with this platform rather than finding some Rails based system. WordPress Video Plugin and View Counter. Unless the view counter is getting it wrong I seemed to be getting more views than I was expecting, maybe I’ll install Stat Traq and get Google Analytics going again to get a better idea of what are reading.
